Platelet-rich-plasma is a new treatment option for a variety of injuries and orthopedic conditions. Blood is made of RBC (Red Blood Cells), WBC (White Blood Cells), Plasma, and Platelets. Platelets, which are essential and responsible for blood clotting, have also been found, that when activated in the body, release healing proteins called growth factors. These growth factors are thought to accelerate tissue and wound healing. Therefore, after increasing the concentration of these platelets in a certain area (e.g. for tennis elbow), we are able to deliver a large amount of growth factors that can dramatically enhance tissue recovery and reduce inflammation.
With the use of PRP and the technique of utilizing ultrasound guidance for injections, we are seeing improved results with much less post injection pain.
The process is simple:
- Your blood is drawn in the office
- It is put in a centrifuge and “spun down” to separate the platelet-rich-plasma from your blood
- The PRP is then injected into the area where you are having pain or where healing is necessary
